Coach Pete
Bigger…Faster…Stronger… These three traits are everything I desired as an overweight, slow, mediocre athlete. As a child I always desired to be like everyone else, not myself. My confidence and self-esteem was at an all time low. I remember how embarrassing it was to finish last in sprints. I would do anything to have the athletic ability of my teammates. There were only two things that kept this engine going:

  1. Great coaches
  2. A deep desire to be superior to others on the field

My real journey didn’t start to unfold until college. As an incoming athlete my work ethic was already there, but I had pretty much reached a plateau of my athletic ability. As a student at Texas State University I started interning at an elite strength and conditioning facility in Austin called Train 4 The Game (T4TG). What they taught me took me to a new level, and better yet, took my athletic ability far beyond what I thought was possible. I have always been a strength and conditioning junky! I love heavy squats, bench press, sit ups, bleacher sprints, box jumps, etc. What I gained interning at T4TG was a much needed new pair of glasses.

I always viewed Performance Training as, “heavier is better” and “more is better.” One day while I was working out my mentor took a glimpse at me and asked what I was training for. He asked why I was doing certain exercises. And wanted to know why these exercises were beneficial for me. I genuinely didn’t have an answer for how my workout was making me a better rugby player. To sum things up, I quickly found out that I hadn’t the slightest clue of REAL human function. That’s when I dove in head first to the important aspects of improving athletic performance. What I began learning through scientific law, was how the human body REALLY works when doing anything from a bio-mechanical or physiological aspect. In a matter of days I knew I struck gold being able to mentor under such great coaches and was now on my way to becoming a better coach and a better athlete.
